New UME Foundational Competencies Website Shares Updates and Collects Community Feedback

A website has been set up to provide information and updates on the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Competencies initiative. The initiative, launched last year by the ACGME, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), aims to create a common set of foundational competencies for use in UME programs in the US and improve the transition to graduate medical education.

The site includes a general overview of the initiative, including a timeline, as well as a list of project sponsors, Working and Advisory Group members, and frequently asked questions. The website will allow the organizations to provide project updates in real time and collect feedback from the medical education community through a form.

Last year, the AAMC held a series of public discussion forums, open to the medical education continuum, to collect early input. Participants were asked questions related to the evolution of competency-based education in UME and more than 1,000 individuals participated. A PDF summary of the feedback obtained to date will be available on the website in the coming weeks. This and additional input gathered through the website form will inform the recommendations of the Working Group as the initiative progresses.
